If you are reading this article, it might be because of an interest in learning English. If you want to study in a formal program in America, I would like to suggest that you consider coming to Madison. Madison has two English-as-a-Second language schools that I will briefly introduce today.

Wisconsin English as a Second Language Institute (WESLI) has been in Madison since 1981. It offers classes from beginning level conversation to courses designed to train students to study at university in the U.S. Additionally, it offers on-line classes.

Students at WESLI can choose to stay in a dormitory with other students, or with a homestay family. In either case, the staff at WESLI helps to arrange accommodations.

Madison English as a Second Language School (MESLS) also offers beginning level to advanced level classes. In addition, it offers special interest classes such as American Slang, Drama, and Research Paper Writing. Students live in the apartments that are located in the same building as the school.

I personally do not have any connection to WESLI or MESLS - I am not, for example, being paid to recommend them. I can, however, strongly recommend Madison as a wonderful place to stay. It has beautiful lakes and parks, delicious restaurants, and friendly people. Because of University of Wisconsin-Madison, there are many students that give the city an excellent vibrancy. Madison is a city that is big enough to offer many things to do, but that is a safe place to live. Both of these schools are in the heart of downtown and very convenient.

I know from my first study abroad experience many many years ago, and from being a student and teacher of Japanese, that living in a foreign country is the best way to learn a language.
